Vancouver Island Easter Seals Regatta and Festival, September 10, 2011

The Vancouver Island Easter Seals Regatta and Festival is the largest charitable boating Regatta on Vancouver Island. Proudly hosted by the Royal Victoria Yacht, this unique Regatta focuses on fun both on and off the water. An exciting race is followed by an afternoon of fun onshore with a silent and live auction, a Kids Zone area, live entertainment and a delicious dinner. In 2009, skippers and their crews raised $43,000, which brings the event total to an outstanding $637,000 raised to support specialized programs and services for children with disabilities.

Disabled Sailing Association of British Columbia promotes freedom and independence by providing people with disabilities the opportunity to actively participate in an exciting and challenging outdoor sport. Uses a specially designed adaptive sailboat, the Martin-16, which allows joystick or (mouth-operated) sip 'n' puff control. DSA has affiliates in Victoria, Chemainus, Kelowna, and other cities across Canada.

Inspired by DSA-BC and Sam Sullivan's efforts to expose more and more people with very high levels of physical disabilities to the sport, adaptive sailing has now spread across Canada, throughout the US and around the world. Disabled sailing now plays a major role in the Summer Paralympics every four years.

We provide opportunities for recreational and competitive sailing as well as instruction for first-time sailors. DSA' sailing season runs from June through August. Despite the schedule sailors are encouraged to come at any time and usually our staff can find an available sailboat on short notice

How We Help VARIETY

Variety provides financial assistance to individual children and families for mobility and communication devices; equipment such as wheelchairs, walkers, specialized bicycles, prosthetics, hearing devices as well as lifts and tie-downs to make vehicles wheelchair accessible. Variety also disburses funds for emergency situations through the Emergency Response Fund.

Through organizational grants, Variety provides life saving and life enhancing equipment to hospitals and organizations around the province. From the construction and renovations of a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit or pediatric emergency room to the purchase of the incubators, beds and monitoring systems that furnish them, Variety provides the necessary financial assistance to equip communities in BC with many of the resources needed to care for its children.

Thanks to our generous donors, sponsors and volunteers, Variety is able to help more kids then ever before, but with over 1,200 requests for assistance every year, the need has never been greater. Variety needs your help to continue providing for families, communities and organizations throughout British Columbia.
